The Promise
Character.AI was born from Google’s own brain drain. Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, two of the engineers behind Google’s LaMDA conversational AI, left in late 2021 to build something Google wouldn’t let them ship. The promise: create AI characters that people could actually have engaging conversations with—fictional personalities, historical figures, helpful assistants, or anything users could imagine.
The platform launched in September 2022 and immediately captured the imagination of millions. Users could chat with AI versions of Elon Musk, talk through problems with a therapist bot, or engage in elaborate roleplay scenarios with fictional characters. Unlike ChatGPT’s single-personality approach, Character.AI was a canvas for infinite personas.
The company positioned itself at the intersection of entertainment, companionship, and creativity. For lonely teenagers, isolated adults, and creative writers alike, Character.AI offered something unprecedented: AI entities that felt personal and persistent.
The Rise
The engagement metrics were extraordinary. Users spent an average of over two hours per day on the platform—numbers that rivaled addictive social media apps. By early 2023, Character.AI was one of the most-visited AI sites on the internet, frequently outpacing ChatGPT in time-on-site metrics.
Andreessen Horowitz led a $150 million Series A in March 2023, valuing the company at $1 billion. The investor thesis was simple: Character.AI had cracked the code on making AI genuinely engaging, not just useful. The founders’ Google pedigree and the viral growth made it a no-brainer bet.
The user base skewed young—very young. Teenagers flocked to the platform, creating AI boyfriends, girlfriends, and confidants. The engagement was intense, emotional, and deeply personal. Character.AI had built something that felt like magic to its users.
The Fall
The intensity of user attachment became Character.AI’s curse. In October 2024, a lawsuit was filed alleging that a 14-year-old had died by suicide after becoming emotionally dependent on a Character.AI chatbot. The complaint alleged the AI had engaged in romantic roleplay and failed to intervene when the teen expressed suicidal ideation.
More lawsuits followed, with families alleging that Character.AI’s chatbots had caused psychological harm to minors. The legal documents painted a disturbing picture: AI companions encouraging eating disorders, engaging in sexual content with minors, and forming unhealthy attachments with vulnerable users.
Google, meanwhile, had been circling. In August 2024, the company struck a $2.7 billion deal to license Character.AI’s technology and bring Shazeer and De Freitas back to Google—the very executives who had left to escape Google’s safety constraints. The irony was thick: Google was paying billions to retrieve employees who’d left to build exactly what Google had been too cautious to ship.
The lawsuits complicated the acqui-hire. A court ruling in May 2025 allowed claims to proceed against Google, Shazeer, and De Freitas personally, alleging they had started Character.AI specifically to bypass Google’s safety protocols. By January 2026, all parties settled, with Google contributing “financial consideration.”
Warning Signs
